SUMMARY:

The LED Engineer is responsible for delivering LED board solutions for novel solid state lighting luminaire and lamp projects. This individual will work closely with members from Lighting and Components teams to define and validate product designs to meet required technical specifications, project schedules and production volumes. A successful candidate will be a resourceful problem solver that is able to work around technical obstacles and will be adept at the implementation of practical solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Own LED selection and binning definition for new lamps and luminaires under development.
• Communicate between Lighting and Components teams to ensure optimal selection of LED to maximize performance and minimize overall cost to Cree.
• Analyze and communicate LED color/brightness distributions and availability to Lighting team.
• Align LED availability, Lighting LED demand and project schedules between Components and Lighting teams.
• Drive the resolution of LED related issues/concerns between Components and Lighting teams.
• Ensure alignment between LED Chips and Components roadmaps/portfolios and Lighting product roadmap/portfolio.
• Propose LED and binning changes/improvements based on pilot build data to optimize performance and minimize fallout at the factory.
• Place orders and follow-up on deliveries of LEDs and LED boards for prototype builds.
• Propose LED and LED board changes to products in volume production to fully capitalize on the rapid improvements in LED performance and cost over time.
• Define LED board layout and conduct design of experiments to refine and validate design to meet specification.
• Perform color measurements and analyze color data on pilot builds samples. Characterize units from pilot builds from a color management perspective.
• Work together with Test Engineering to define factory CCT test and Tuning solutions for new products.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• BS in Mechanical Engineering, Materials or Electrical Engineering with experience in product development and manufacturing.
• Demonstrated knowledge of LED components, LED lighting systems and LED testing.
• Ability to work independently and be self-sufficient while managing multiple projects.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Willing and open to travel - both domestic and international.
• Demonstrated project management abilities.
• Resourceful, hands-on, problem solving individual with initiative and drive to work around technical obstacles.
• Ability to manage a small team with various levels of experience.
