 Job Description 

Police Inspector

The Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) is the nation's fifth largest transportation system with a vast network of fixed route services including commuter rail, subway/elevated, trackless trolley, light rail, and bus serving a 2,200 square mile service region. SEPTA's Operations Division is seeking a Police Inspector who will be responsible for directing and leading all (270) members of the SEPTA Transit Police Department below the rank of Chief of Police. Through Police Captains the Police Inspector monitors police performance and manages assignments. Seeking seasoned command-level manager with extensive experience in patrol operations, investigative functions and tactical operations.

Responsibilities include:
*Overseeing and directing daily operations.
*The development of objectives, policies and procedures.
*Creating strategies to address crime and safety.
*Serving as department head in absence of Chief of Police.
*Identifying and implementing training needs.
*Working in concert with other internal departments to ensure protection of Authority interests.
*Implementing measures to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
* Monitoring and assessing administrative processes.
*Coordinating expense budget spending for the department.


Candidates must possess a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Business or related field with eight (8) years of progressively responsible and exemplary law enforcement service required, which includes a minimum of five (5) years experience in high level management, senior executive or command capacity.

An equivalent combination of experience and education may be considered in lieu of the above requirements, (i.e. two years of related experience equating to one (1) year of formal post high school).

The successful candidate will have superior skills and experience in the following areas: broad and extensive proficiency in all aspects of police work, excellent verbal and written communication skills and excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with varied management individuals, both internal and external. Must possess and maintain current drivers license. Must have PA. Municipal Police Officer's Education and Training Act Certification within 6 months of hire.

The role of Police Inspector necessitates fluctuating work hours at the Chief's direction including availability on week-ends, holidays and for special events and emergency situations.

The salary range for this position is $85,000 to $100,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
