SEPTA is hiring a Senior Mainframe Systems Administrator for our Center City location. Candidate must have a bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field from an accredited institution and a minimum of six years of IBM mainframe system support/administration experience.

Salary for this position will range from $75,660 - $94,588


OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Install and functionally manage the array of IBM operating system and all other system software,
which define the SEPTA Technical Enterprise Computing environment, ensuring a reliable and secure resource for clients throughout the Authority.


SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Implements IBM z/OS and z/VM operating system software, including new releases, and periodic maintenance.

2. Installs, maintains and controls storage management software, including disk and tape storage media.

3. Customizes operating system and storage management software to meet SEPTA’s specific computing needs.

4. Manages the change control process via IBM System Modification Program to ensure accuracy and completeness of operating system alterations.

5. Directs and supports all computer operations, application programming, and technical support personnel in the use of storage management and operating system utilities for all mainframe operations.

6. Administers the size and placement of all production disk files to maximize the utilization of online storage hardware.

7. Reviews and recommends system software packages or custom programs to provide control of data hardware.

8. Monitors system performance and storage subsystem capacity through the use of both proprietary and in-house software to meet service level commitments for efficiency and stability.

9. Resolves problems in operating system and storage management software. This includes interfacing with vendor hot-line or on-site support personnel.

10. Maintains a comprehensive knowledge of existing operating system software and operational techniques through on-the-job training, review of technical publications, and technical seminars.

11. Implements all production Enterprise Server applications to maximize utilization of processor and storage resources. Ensures that appropriate licenses are in place.

12. Facilitates the change control process for systems and applications to ensure the accuracy and completeness of Mainframe based systems.

13. Monitors system performance and capacity through the use of both proprietary and in-house software to meet service level commitments for efficiency and stability.

14. Resolves problems in Enterprise Server environments. This includes, but is not limited to, interfacing with vendor hot-line or on-site support personnel.

15. Instructs IT Staff Personnel in the use of Enterprise Server systems and utilities.

16. Performs other duties as assigned/required, including “on-call” coverage and response to service implementation or restoration issues.
 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field from an accredited institution in the United States required, and a minimum of six (6) years of IBM mainframe system support/administration experience required within an enterprise level company.

• An equivalent combination of education and experience (two (2) years of related experience equating to one (1) year of formal post high school education) may be considered in lieu of the above educational requirement, however, a minimum of five (5) years relevant experience is required.

• Excellent analytical, verbal and written communication skills required.

• Thorough knowledge and relevant experience with IBM z/OS technologies, Open MVS interfaces, SMS SMP/e, Workload Manager, RACF, TCP/IP, z/OS performance, CICS, and CA Datacom required.

• Demonstrated and proven skillset of techniques for installation, maintenance, tuning and debugging of CICS, CA Datacom and advanced debugging (GTF trace and IBM dump support); backup technologies practices and recovery techniques for z/OS and z/VM servers required.

• Complete understanding and experience in the execution of modem storage management technologies as it relates to the IBM mainframe environment is required.

• Demonstrated knowledge and experience of best practice applications for ensuring server security, data integrity, tuning production (applications and databases) and enhancement of operations of the z/OS and z/VM server environment to meet performance objectives required.

• Must be able to work outside of normal hours for after-hours coverage needs. On-call requirements may occur at any time during the 7 X 24 period inclusive of weekends/holidays.

• Valid driver’s license required.
