SEPTA Engineering Management Rotation Program - 2020

SEPTA is the largest transit system in Pennsylvania and the 6th largest in the nation. We operate a multi-modal Bus, Subway/Elevated, Trolley, Trackless Trolley, Regional Rail, and Para-Transit network serving a 2200 square mile region across Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia Counties and select destinations in New Jersey and the State of Delaware.

We are currently recruiting to fill entry level Engineer I positions for our SEPTA 2020 Engineering Management Rotation Program set to begin after June, 2020. These opportunities are in various Departments in our Engineering, Maintenance and Construction (EM&C) Division and our Vehicle Engineering Division (VE).

This is a unique opportunity for entry level Engineers interested in the maintenance and construction of SEPTA's Bridges and Buildings, Power, Track, and Communications/Signals Infrastructure and for our Buses, Trolleys, Rail and Subway cars. For approximately the first year of employment you will rotate through training assignments in various departments in either the EM&C or our Vehicle Engineering division based on your Engineering major. Rotations for the EM&C division include Infrastructure Maintenance, Design Engineering, Project Management of 3RD Party Design, 3rd Party Construction, In-House Construction, and Project Coordination. Our Vehicle Engineering Division will have you rotate through our Regional Rail, Subway, Trolley, Trackless Trolley, Bus, and Quality Assurance departments.

Vacant permanent assignments are expected in the various departments in EM&C and Vehicle Engineering. Those departments include Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Capital Construction, Asset Mgt., Vehicle Engineering(Bus and Rail), andQuality Assurance.

If you are a new, entry-level engineer with your Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Civil, Structural, Mechanical or Electrical), please apply. We are especially interested in candidates who may have worked in Engineering Co-ops or internships during their academic experience; and have a strong academic background and interpersonal skills.


The Engineering I position is responsible for undertaking engineering/quality assurance assignments that are considered to be of "basic complexity" in size and scope. This position is further responsible to provide technical support and direction for engineering/quality assurance activities including the definition and coordination for design review and implementation, establishing inspection plans, program/project development and consulting, statistical methods, audits, and continuous improvement approaches to ensure activities are
consistent with SEPTA mission values and goals.


I. General

a) Consults with senior level engineer/supervision-quality assurance in project definition.
b) Exercises good judgment in application of basic engineering and quality assurance principles.
c) Generates written memoranda, technical reports, specifications, audits, etc. in a professional manner.
d) Assists in the preparation of budgets for proposed work to be accomplished through SEPTA force account labor or third party contractors.
e) Interfaces with municipal government/regulating agencies as well as other railroads and transit properties.

II. Program Management and Construction Engineering Disciplines

a) Documents for record all major design concepts, approaches and agreements made with any and all parties involved in the project.
b) Assists Project Engineering with preparation of reports relating to progress of the work and the Contractor's compliance with progress schedule, shop drawings, and other submittals.
c) Assists Project Engineer in project management tasks.
d) Maintains a diary or log book to record Contractor manpower and hours on the job site; weather conditions; data relative to work directive changes, change orders or, changed conditions; list of job site visitors, daily activities, decisions, and observant in general.

III. Facilities, Engineering and Construction Disciplines

a) Assists in Engineering design and analysis in assigned field
(i.e. Civil and/or Structural Engineering).
b) Assists in investigations/field surveys.
c) Be aware of and practice standards as applicable to assigned field.
d) Reviews drawings for accuracy and completeness coordinating with other specialty groups within the department where necessary/advisable.
e) Assists in preliminary planning layouts/sketches where dictated by assigned task/project.
f) Performs other duties as assigned.

IV. Vehicle Engineering Disciplines

a) Provides technical assistance to vehicle maintenance personnel.
b) Oversees any vehicular drafting assignments pertaining to assigned tasks.
c) Defines, implements, and documents new or more effective maintenance procedures for an assigned fleet of vehicles.
d) Utilizes computerized maintenance records (SMART) as an aid in resolving
Issues related to vehicle system fault or malfunction.
e) Creates file maintenance inputs to ensure material for vehicle repair/renewal is properly designed.


- B. S. Degree in Engineering - Civil and/or Structural, Mechanical or Electrical.
- Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Excellent PC skills including Microsoft Office applications.
- Working knowledge of Autocad, MicroStation, or similar.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Experience with, or knowledge of railroad infrastructure and operations desirable.
