Important Notice for All Employment Applicants Re-entering Citizens Ban the Box Ordinance.

Philadelphia passed the amended Fair Criminal Records Screening Standards (Ban the Box) Ordinance concerning the employment of re-entering citizens. This Ordinance goes into effect on March 1, 2016. The Ban the Box Ordinance generally applies to all employers within the City of Philadelphia, and is designed to ensure the fair hiring of individuals with criminal records.

SEPTA is a transportation authority created by the law of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. As a Commonwealth authority, SEPTA is subject to the law of the Commonwealth on matters of employment, which differ from the broader requirements imposed upon employers under the Ban the Box Ordinance. Consequently, the background checks conducted by SEPTA comply with the law of the Commonwealth and will in some instances be more extensive than the new seven-year lookback period under the Ban the Box Ordinance. Therefore, certain felony/misdemeanor convictions may still impact an applicants suitability for employment for certain positions based upon the Pennsylvania Criminal History Information Act (18 Pa.C.S. 9102 et seq.) and SEPTAs internal review policies.
